Immunisation Nurse Co-ordinator

Vaccines have made a significant contribution to better health, they have saved millions of lives throughout the world.

In the UK, every child can have protection against preventable diseases, and it is important that all children are offered the chance to be vaccinated safely and effectively.

The UK childhood immunisation programme aims to give children the best protection against infectious diseases. The childhood immunisation programme ensures that children are protected from infancy, through their teenage years and on to adulthood.

Vaccine preventable diseases are rare in the UK because of the high levels of vaccine coverage. However, experience shows that these diseases can come back if the number of immunised children falls.

Anyone who has not been immunised is at risk. (Department of Health)

Up to date immunisation information is available on www.immunisation.nhs.uk Translated immunisation information is also available from this web-site.

The Immunisation Nurse Advisor aims to promote best practice guidelines so that children have access to a standard, clinically effective immunisation service delivered by school health teams across the city. This is achieved by:-

  • Delivering appropriate childhood immunisation training programmes for Trust staff
  • Co-ordinating routine and mass immunisation campaigns completed by school health teams across Birmingham
  • Acting as a resource for information and advice in relation to immunisation

In Birmingham, local school health teams visit more than 100 venues every year across the city to offer immunisation services to children and young people. Venues include mainstream schools, special schools, behaviour/support units, independent schools and health centre based vaccination clinics.
