Patient in Spinal Clinic with Consultant, Specialist Nurse and Physiotherapist

Services we provide

We provide assessment and advice and onward referrals as necessary to assist you in managing your condition.

Who is the Service for?

For anyone over 16 years old with rehabilitation needs following a spinal cord injury due to interrupted blood supply, surgery, infection or tumours. Generally we do not see people who have spinal cord injuries following accidents, they are seen by the regional spinal unit in Oswestry. The Oswestry team hold a clinic at the West Midlands Rehabilitation Clinic four times a year for some Birmingham based patients.

Referral Process

A referral can be made by any healthcare professional. This goes to a pooled referrals meeting held weekly. If appropriate, you will receive an appointment letter with some information about the clinic within 13 weeks of your referral being received by us.

If you would like to make a referral please use the downloadable version of the:

What will happen in the clinic?

You are welcome to bring a relative or carer to the clinic. A team of professionals will see you. They will first ask you some questions and listen to your replies and concerns regarding your condition. You will also have a physical assessment. It is useful to bring a list of current medication and any walking aids or splints you regularly use

What we do at an assessment?

We will ask questions regarding your condition and how it affects your activities. Listen to your replies and concerns. We will also test the strength and sensation of your limbs. We may also ask you to show us how you normally manage some situations or activities

What happens after the assessment?

We will discuss our findings and what we feel you need for ongoing treatments or further assessments. With your agreement will make these referrals. In some cases the therapist or nurse specialist from the clinic may do these assessments or treatments. We will then agree with you whether we need to see you again and when this will happen. A summary letter from the clinic will be sent to the person who referred you. A copy can also be sent to you
