The clinic assesses people with complex tone problems. We aim to co-ordinate appropriate management specifically for you as a person.
The team consists of:
- Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine
- Physiotherapist
- Occupational Therapist
- Nurse
- Medical Secretary/Clinic Co-ordinator
Who is the service for?
Patients whose tone (spasticity or dystonia), may cause them difficulties in their everyday life and becomes a problem to control that your GP or local rehabilitation team is unable to help you with. An example of why you may need an appointment at the clinic is; your medication has been reviewed by your GP or consultant and your problems of tight muscles, spasms or pain continue to cause you difficulties affecting your independence, carer burden or quality of life.
Referral process
Referrals can be made by a health professional with details of patient difficulties and goals, also previous treatments and the effects of these.

What will happen at the clinic?
The team will carry out an assessment, during which we will:
- Identify how your spasticity/dystonia affects you on a daily basis
- Identify how your condition is affecting you generally
- Complete a physical assessment to determine how your tone affects you. Please bring suitable (loose) clothing for this assessment
- Assist you in setting realistic goals. It would be helpful if you could think about what you would like to achieve before you come to your appointment
- Plan treatment to improve your condition or prevent long-term problems where possible
What will happen next?
We will help you to manage your tone. This may include advice, teaching of exercises such as stretching as part of your daily routine to improve function or prevent complications of tight muscles. Other treatments may include:
- Botulinum Toxin
- Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES)
- A change in medication
- A course of therapy
- Nerve block
Referral to support services:
You may be asked to return for follow up appointments so we can monitor your progress until you are discharged.
