Health professionals pages

These pages are intended to provide best practice, support and information for health professionals seeking further information about lymphoedema.

Lymphoedema is a build up of fluid in the body tissues. The colourless lymph fluid normally drains back in to the blood circulation through a network of channels and lymph nodes. The lymph nodes help filter lymph fluid and help provide the body with a defence system. If the lymph system becomes damaged or blocked, lymph accumulates in the body tissues and swelling occurs.
