School Nursing (Special Schools)
Special School Nurses undertake a range of activities aimed at improving the health of children at school and promoting healthy lifestyles in adulthood.
We support this through:
- Conducting health education sessions within schools as part of the National Curriculum. Topics may include nutrition, smoking cessation, puberty and healthy lifestyles
- Undertaking health interviews and screen for vision, hearing and growth to identify health problems early and start appropriate care and referrals
- Implementing immunisation programmes within the school setting
- Offering health education, support and advice to individual pupils during confidential drop-in sessions
- Assisting with the identification of children who are at risk of failing to reach their full potential due to neglect, abuse or family dysfunction
- Working with teachers and other agencies to provide ongoing support for children and parents or carers experiencing a range of difficulties, such as bed-wetting, substance abuse and behavioural problems
- Clinical treatment, monitoring and support for children with special needs
- Education and support to school staff concerning children who require medication
