Palliative Care at Sheldon Unit

Palliative care aims to give patients choice, privacy, dignity and autonomy. When death is inevitable, the focus of care is to enable patients to die in comfort in an environment that is supportive to the patient and their carers.

The service aims to provide such care in the most appropriate setting for each individual eg. patient’s home, residential or nursing home, hospice or health centre.

We provide inpatient palliative care for people in the final stages of an illness including weekly consultant reviews at the Sheldon Unit. We’ve invested in a new specialist palliative care unit (also to be called the Sheldon Unit) at West Heath Hospital where we have now relocated. This is to ensure that our service is fit for purpose for many years to come and continues to provide high quality, compassionate care.

District nursing services across the city provide support to patients in their own home in partnership with local hospices , intermediate care and private/third sector hospice at home providers.

Who is it for?

The service is for patients who meet the continuing care criteria for palliative care and who have highly complex needs, requiring skilled healthcare interventions on a 24-hour basis.
