West Midlands AAC care pathway

The aim of the West Midlands Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) care pathway is to provide equitable access to high quality AAC assessment and intervention for clients who need augmentative and alternative communication.  The care pathway is supported and updated by the West Midlands AAC Clinical Excellence Network CEN.

The care pathway is a tool to support local teams to look in as much detail as is needed at the client and their communication plus the skills, knowledge and needs of those around them.  It provides the cues to then implement actions and clinical management and/ or educational input to develop the communication of the person at the focus of the pathway.

These actions might include training, the development of augmentative and alternative communication systems and/or the provision/trial of a communication aid.

The care pathway guides local teams to practical ways to make progress, for example considering the needs of the person around their vision, or the needs of a team in setting they attend such as a day centre or school.
