Neuro rehab team set to take the plunge!

Members of the Birmingham Neurological Rehabilitation Tema are set to take the plunge for charity as part of a fundraising drive organised by a grateful patient.

The Birmingham Neurological Rehabilitation Team (BNRT) is an outpatient and community rehab team based on Ward 3 at Moseley Hall Hospital.

For over 16 years, the team has been providing rehabilitation for patients with a variety of conditions including: stroke, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries, amongst many others.

Through multidisciplinary teamwork and a holistic approach to therapy, BNRT aid their patients in becoming as independent as they can, with the aim of achieving the greatest possible quality of life.

Shula Murphy (pictured) underwent a twelve-week rehabilitation programme with the team following a diagnosis of transverse myelitis (an inflammatory condition of the spinal cord).

The programme consisted of balance, core stability and endurance training with gait re-education, alongside more functional rehab such as, wheelchair community access and re-learning how perform day-to-day tasks in a safe way.

Shula said: "I wanted to give thanks for the care and support I received so decided to organise a tasty treat sale and raffle as well as get staff skydiving to raise those much needed extra funds to support further BNRT patients in their rehabilitation journey’’

"As an ex-patient and medical professional I can see how money raised could really enhance the service further for future patients’’

Physiotherapist Jethro Weyman and occupational therapist James Davis worked with Shula throughout her programme.

Jethro said: "Shula is an inspiration, she is a very determined individual. The least we could do is take a leap of faith ourselves and help her in her mission to make a difference’’

James added: "We would like thank Shula for all of her hard work setting up the fund-raiser - the bake sale, the raffle and the skydive. Without her, none of this would have happened."
