During October, thousands of people across England are taking part in Stoptober - a new, exciting 28 day challenge to stop smoking.

To launch the West Midlands’ campaign, advisors from Birmingham Community Healthcare’s (BCHC) stop smoking team held an event in the Bullring where local celebrities joined-in to show their support.

Free Radio presenters Foxy and Giuliano, Birchfield Harriers athlete Edirin Okoro and Aston Villa FC mascot ‘Chip’ joined the NHS in the first ever mass participation Stoptober event.

Carol Carter, clinical lead nurse for BCHC stop smoking service, said: “Stoptober is a brand new addition to the stop smoking calendar of events. It’s the first mass quit attempt of its kind encouraging the UK’s 8million smokers to stop smoking for 28 days. Research tells us if you can stop smoking for 28 days, you are five times more likely to stay quit.

“We know many smokers want to quit this time of year, so Stoptober gives them a focal point and makes it easier than ever to access our wide range of services and support.”
