Fit for 2022

Early in 2018, we set out our ambition to ensure that BCHC is ‘Fit for 2022’ the year in which Birmingham will really be in the spotlight as host city of the Commonwealth Games.

This gives us an opportunity to create a focus for our improvement as an organisation.

Key to this is a refresh of our organisation’s vision, values and strategy, giving all colleagues an opportunity to participate so that there is a shared sense of ownership of the way we go about providing all the communities we serve with the very best quality healthcare.

The first stage in this has been to actively engage with our colleagues, and other stakeholders, to hear your views on what works well and what we can improve.

Response to our staff engagement has been fantastic – more than 400 colleagues joined five 'Big Conversation' events and we have received 3,000 responses to our Pulse Check staff survey - with 3,400 ideas for improvement put forward and 146 ‘quick wins’ identified (so far).

More than 600 colleagues also took part in a vote to decide what the new BCHC values should be.

NHS Staff Survey 2018

More than 1,900 colleagues completed the NHS Staff Survey 2018, representing a 44 per cent response rate and a welcome improvement on engagement as compared to 12 months earlier – an increase of four per cent. We are working hard to address those areas in which colleagues identified room for improvement – notably quality of appraisals; health and wellbeing; and equality and diversity.

The results were consistent with the messages the senior team has heard loud and clear from the engagement work that shaped our new vision and values and give us confidence in the direction of travel we are on and a clear baseline against which to track progress as we deliver the plans that we have set out for the year ahead.
