Sickle Cell and Thalassaemia Service

Service operating at reduced capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions. Please refer as normal. 

Overview

To ensure that individuals with a significant haemoglobinopathy or those who wish to ascertain their haemoglobinopathy status aregiven relevant information.

Patients are offered appropriate counselling to enable them to make informed decisions regarding their reproductive choices which may affect their lives and their families.

To provide a high quality, accessible, value for money specialist haemoglobinopathy service to individuals living in Birmingham and Solihull which is non discriminating of age, gender, race, culture and ability.

Services

  • screening – venepuncture,

  • antenatal and neonatal counselling; trait

  • care of patients and families with full-blown conditions in sickle cell disease and thalassaemia major

  • education –provision of resources such as booklets, various media formats e.g. DVD, videos and audio information in various languages.


Hours service available

The service is available 9am - 5pm, Monday to Friday with answering machine facility for out of hours 0121 466 3667. Generic email bchc.sicklecellresults@nhs.net 
An out of hours service is offered once a month between 5pm - 7pm for those unable to access the day time service. Evenings and weekends periodically to cover community events.

Where is service delivered?

This is a pan-Birmingham service and is also available to Solihull residents. Services can be delivered in the following settings, as appropriate:

  • patient's home

  • clinics

  • health centre

  • GP practice

  • Teaching establishments eg.  Universities, acute settings, local social services establishments.


Referral criteria and sources

Criteria for Referral to the Service:

  • Any person who has been screened and who is a carrier for haemoglobinopathy
  • Any relative of a carrier or affected with haemoglobinopathy
  • Any person who wishes to establish their haemoglobinopathy status
  • Any person wanting information about haemoglobinopathies

Appointments take place at hub clinics which are based across the city. Clinic locations for your appointments will be advised during the booking appointment process, based on nearest availability and waiting times.
