What is the non traumatic spinal cord injury rehabilitation clinic?

An outpatient service with a team of specialist professionals offering a multidisciplinary rehabilitation needs assessment, information and advice.

We aim to:

  • Complete an holistic assessment by an interdisciplinary team
  • Complete a physical assessment to determine how your weakness /stiffness affect you
  • Give an opportunity to voice concerns related to your condition
  • Identify how your condition affects you on a daily basis,
  • Identify realistic goals for intervention and future management
  • Identify factors which could influence your condition in the future
  • Make specific recommendations and agree with you referrals on to relevant services

This may also include:

  • Giving specific individual advice and information
  • Giving condition specific education
  • Health promotion
  • Recommend a change in medical management

Following assessment in clinic the team may make onward referrals to local services, to other specialist regional services, or provide advice to your G.P. 

Who is it for?

Any individual with spinal cord damage from causes such as interrupted blood supply, infections, degeneration, inflammation, tumours and surgery who

  • Lives in the West Midlands (although we do assess out of area referral on a individual patient funding basis)

  • Aged 16 and over

  • Stable vertebral column

People we see have conditions such as Spina Bifida, Transverse Myelitis, Myelopathy, Spinal Cord Infarct or Bleeding, Spinal Cysts or Tumours, Syringomyelia and Spondylosis.

These diagnoses can lead to difficulties in

  • Mobility and moving around
  • Bladder and Bowel management
  • Pain management
  • Muscle weakness or stiffness/spasticity
  • Activities of daily living and work

The aim of our clinic is to optimise independence and activity in social, personal and domestic life and assist people in managing the impact of their long term condition.                                                                                  

People who have spinal cord injuries following accidents are generally seen by the regional West Midlands Centre for Spinal Injuries in Oswestry.  They hold a satellite clinic quarterly at the WMRC.

Who delivers the service?

On assessment you will routinely be seen by a

  • Consultant in rehabilitation Dr Eskiturk

  • Specialist physiotherapist in Neuro rehabilitation Team lead Billie Searle

  • Specialist occupational therapist Neuro rehabilitation

  • Specialist nurse Neuro rehabilitation

Other team members may be involved in treatment according to individual patient problems and needs which are identified from the referral information or at subsequent appointments. This may include:-

  • Clinical Psychologist
  • Speech and Language Therapist

Other important team members

  • Medical Secretary/Clinic Co-ordinator Appointments Co-ordinator
  • You may also access other services within the West Midlands Rehabilitation Centre if required such as:
  • Specialist Orthotics service
  • Wheelchair services
  • Spasticity specialist clinic
  • Posture and mobility services
  • Patient Information service and liaison service (PALS) reps
