Supporting families of children with a DLD

A developmental language disorder (DLD) awareness course for parents/carers of primary age children with a DLD diagnosis is being offered this school term.

The course will be delivered jointly by BCHC speech and language therapists and the l anguage, learning and strategic suppor t team, part of specialist SEND support services at Birmingham City Council.

DLD Together was devised by two UK charities who focus on DLD - Afasic (for families) and NAPLIC (for professionals) - to make it easier for families who want to know more about DLD to access information.

Families of children attending a Birmingham primary school are invited to register their interest for the course by completing this form. Following submission of the completed form, organisers will be in touch with families individually to confirm whether they have been allocated a place on the course.

Places are limited, so families who meet the above requirements will then be offered a place on a first come, first served basis.

The course aims to help parent/carers to:

  • understand about DLD and how it applies to their child
  • develop an understanding of your child's individual language profile
  • develop strategies to support your child at home.
  • learn how to support their child's learning.
  • meet other families of children with DLD.

Course Structure:

The group session will be led by two trainers - an NHS speech and language therapist and a Birmingham SEND advisory teacher. The course will run over two dates - one full day plus a 90-minute online session the following week:

  • Wednesday, 11 March: 9:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. IN PERSON at Ninestiles School, Acocks Green (lunch and refreshments provided)
  • Thursday 19th of March: 9:15 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. ONLINE

It is important that participants attend both sessions to get as much out of the course as possible.

If allocated a place, other adult family members are welcome to attend and take part.

Organisers hope to run a secondary-age course this autumn.

Any applicant who has not had their place confirmed by 2 March, who would like help completing the form or has any questions, should email language, learning and strategic support teacher Kate Starr.
