Supporting our Learning Disability community

Birmingham is home to a population of 1.1million people, in which around 24,000 people have a learning disability.
A learning disability is to do with the way someone’s brain works. Having a learning disability can make it harder for someone to learn, understand or do things.
It is important to BCHC that we offer specialist healthcare and support to people living with learning disabilities to help them live happy, healthy, independent and fulfilling lives.
Our services work closely with other professionals and specialists to ensure that a patient’s needs are met and in a way that is person-centred. Whilst our Learning Disability Services supports patients at a wide range of locations, including at home, our main sites are The Greenfields, Jaffray Centre, Kingswood Drive and Riverside Lodge.
This week is Learning Disability Week, the theme is ‘Do you see me?’ One of the ways we help to improve the care we provide is by giving our patients a platform to share their experiences and discuss what went well and what didn’t in the care they received.
Below, we hear from members of our Learning Disability (LD) Service User Group Thomas, Nicola, Samiya, Bryn and Daniella who each share their own experiences of having a learning disability and explain how we can all help to play our part in supporting the LD community. They also discuss the value of the LD Service User Group and how this empowers them to feel seen, valued and heard.
