The BCHC patient supporting people with hidden disabilities

Meet Curtis, a patient at BCHC who is making it his mission to support people across Birmingham with hidden disabilities.
As well as advocating for those with learning disabilities, Curtis volunteers his time to give presentations to Birmingham Hospice and Primrose Hospice, educating the wider community on what it is like to have a hidden disability. Curtis created an easy read booklet that gives examples of what hidden disabilities are, offering advice or support to those who need it. He also shares how he has overcome challenges in his life, commenting:
“When something used to set me back, I used to feel anxious, sad, angry, confused, worthless, like someone was judging me, saying “you aren’t good enough to do certain things!” But I think I have found what I feel passionate about; to stand up and be counted.”
Curtis’ hopes for the future are to visit schools across the patch, helping the next generation to understand both hidden and learning disabilities better.
Thank you, Curtis, for all you are doing!
