The sound of recovery - Abid's musical farewell and ‘thank you’ to colleagues
Music filled the halls of Moseley Hall Hospital, where stroke survivor Abid Iqbal marked the end of a long recovery journey.
For more than 20 years, Abid has dedicated his life to music, with his greatest passion being Qawwali music and how it brings people together and connects cultures.
Just days before a Qawwali group he had arranged to come to the UK was due to arrive, Abid suffered a devastating stroke. The man who had spent his life immersed in music suddenly found himself unable to speak, walk or even raise his hand.
Thanks to the compassionate care and support of the multidisciplinary team on Ward 8, coupled with his own determination, Abid has made remarkable progress in his recovery. Today, he can speak, shake hands, and walk with the aid of a stick. While his recovery continues, he and his family say the hospital and its wonderful colleagues have given him his “strength and hope again”.
As he prepares to leave the hospital this week, Abid wanted to express his gratitude in the most meaningful way he could think of - music.
In the conservatory and gardens of Moseley Hall Hospital, Abid organised a special celebration featuring talented musicians and singers, including Faryad Ali. The event was a heartfelt way of thanking the staff who cared for him, while also bringing smiles to patients who were well enough to attend. Staff were also able to enjoy delicious samosas and cake, generously provided by Abid's family.
For Abid, the event was much more than a farewell. It was a heartfelt thank you for the hours of personalised care the team had given him, and a deeply personal tribute to the people who helped him regain his voice, confidence, and independence.
