About our service
The Periodontal service specialises in managing diseases of the gums and associated soft and hard tissues. We provide specialist treatment and advice in all aspects of periodontal and implant health. Patients are seen for advice, diagnosis and second opinions; as well as treatment, providing they fulfil our referral criteria.
The department runs as a partnership with the University of Birmingham, and we undertake world leading research into the causes and impacts of gum diseases on the mouth and on general health, as well as providing teaching to a range of students and dental professionals (dentists, hygiene therapists and nurses). A small number of patients are managed by senior/postgraduate students where appropriate and under specialist supervision.
We also run a national service for adults with the skin blistering condition, Epidermolysis Bullosa.
Patients who meet our criteria can be referred to us by a clinical professional via a referral letter to the Periodontal team.
