What is Computer Access?
ACT supports people who are physically unable to use a mouse due to physical disabilities. Computer Access assessments explore different methods for accessing and using equipment such as computers, tablets, and mobile phones.
ACT can provide adapted equipment such as alternative mice and controllers, alternative keyboards, switch access, eye gaze technology, and additional accessibility software.
Devices can include Windows, iOS (Apple), Android or other operating systems.
Who might use Computer Access?
Computer Access assessments are available for individuals of all ages that meet the NHS England service specification for specialised services. Primarily this refers to people with a significant physical disability that affects upper limb movements making them unable to use standard controls to access their devices.
Patients that are referred for Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Environmental Control (EC) needs may have complex disabilities that include significant physical difficulties affecting upper limb functions. In these instances, computer access methods can also be considered alongside any other reason for their referral.
When a referral is accepted, ACT’s multidisciplinary team will carry out an assessment to choose the most appropriate computer access package for an individual in collaboration with their local team.
Computer Access and the ACT team.
Patients need to have prior experience of using computers, or be training to supplement this, and have clear goals of what they hope to do on a computer / device. ACT can provide training on how to use the equipment that is provided to support with computer access, but training cannot be provided on any software that we have not provided.
ACT are unable to supply computers, tablets, or other devices to patients, only the adapted means to access them. We are also unable to accept referrals where the identified needs of the person can be met by non-specialist solutions that are available and appropriate. Additional support is available on our Information and Resources page, including our leaflet about How to keep using electronic devices when hand function is limited.
ACT is an NHS England funded specialist service focusing on Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), Environmental Controls (EC) and Computer Access. We cover an area that includes the West Midlands County, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Herefordshire and support patients with Computer Access needs and conditions who meet the NHSE eligibility criteria as part of our Environmental Controls service.
