Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting (FGM/C) Referrals Process

How to refer a child for a FGM/C assessment.

Referring to the FGM/C Team

Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) medical assessments are undertaken for girls from birth up to their 18th birthday when there are concerns that Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting may have occurred or that they may be at risk of Female Genital Mutilation / Cutting.

FGM Medical Assessments can only be booked by calling BCHC Central Booking Service on 0121 683 2320 (Option 1). These details will be passed to the FGM Paediatrician who (when available) will call or email the referrer back to discuss further.

Please note that FGM medical assessments are seen in a non-urgent clinic once a month.

If the FGM paediatrician is not available and you require urgent advice, please request a call back from BCHC Named Safeguarding Doctors or, if they are unavailable, contact the ICB advice line on 07730 318300.

If you have any concerns about the safety and/or welfare of a child or young person, contact Birmingham Children's Social Care: Children's Advice & Support Service (CASS):

BCT Staff will look at referrals:

  • Friday 8.45 a.m to 4.15 p.m.

If you believe that the referral you are making is urgent and needs to be responded to when CASS staff are not routinely available, please contact the Emergency Out of Hours Team: 0121 675 4806.

If you have immediate concerns about the safety and/or welfare of a child or young person, contact the Police on 999.
