Our service
The Autism team is a part of the BCHC Neurodevelopmental Pathway Service and assesses children and young people for Autism or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).
What is Autism?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental diagnosis characterised by differences in social communication and interacting with others, alongside differences in some areas of play, routines, behaviour, interests and sensory processing. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is the official diagnostic name given to these characteristics.
Through the assessment process we will gather information about:
- Things which help your child.
- Difficulties they are experiencing.
- Their skills and strengths.
- Approaches and supports you have tried.
The term 'spectrum' means that each autistic person is unique with individual experiences and characteristics therefore we will tailor the assessment to meet the needs of each child or young person.
The assessment team are skilled in working with children and young people of all ages, from preschoolers to late teenagers. We will work with you to ensure that your experiences as a family are heard and recognised, and that the assessment process is meaningful and accessible to each child or young person we meet.
At Birmingham Community Healthcare Trust, we take a holistic and individualised approach to assessing children and young people within our catchment area.
