What do these waiting times mean?

The times shown are the average waiting periods for children who were assessed or diagnosed in that month. We book appointments based on clinical need and how long a child has been waiting, so the actual time can be shorter or longer than the average.

Our services are under high demand, and we are working with clinical teams and partners to improve processes and reduce waiting times.

Autism assessments

  • Children are currently waiting at least 30 months for an autism assessment.
  • Children are currently waiting at least 2.5 months to receive their diagnosis, after their autism assessment.
  • Children are currently waiting at least 32.5 months from referral to diagnosis.

ADHD assessments

  • Children are currently waiting at least 18 months for an ADHD assessment.
  • Children are currently waiting at least 8 months to receive their diagnosis, after their ADHD assessment.
  • Children are currently waiting at least 26 months from referral to diagnosis.

If diagnosed and medication is considered, there is a wait of at least 12 months for a medication follow-up appointment.

Unable to make your appointment?

If you're unable to make your appointment, please contact Central Booking Service with as much notice as possible, so that we can offer the appointment to someone else.

In 2024, we lost 133 ADHD and 194 Autism assessment appointments due to children not attending or cancelling at short notice. These appointments could have been offered to another child waiting for their assessment.
