BFS domestic violence support

Birmingham Forward Steps has two Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs) to work across all ten districts of Birmingham.


 
The Early Years IDVAs, Amelia York and Jayne McDowall, are employed by Birmingham and Solihull Women's Aid (BSWA) and will work specifically with Birmingham Forward Steps, giving direct specialist support to women and children experiencing abuse.


The IDVAs offer a 12 week service and offer emotional and practical support, including:

  • Safety planning,
  • Domestic Abuse awareness
  • Civil injunctions

to women accessing Family Hubs and Children's Centres in Birmingham and affected by domestic abuse.

 
Amelia covers all Barnardo's Family Hubs and Children's Centres (South Birmingham) and Jayne covers Spurgeon's, St Pauls Trust and the Springfield Project (North Birmingham).

Birmingham and Solihull Women's Aid (BSWA)

Birmingham and Solihull Women's Aid (BSWA) provide front line domestic violence and abuse support services to women and children in the Birmingham and Solihull area.

The helpline is open Monday to Friday, 9.30 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.

For face to face support, Theresa Stewart Women's Centre is open for drop in appointments: 

  • Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday: 10.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
  • Wednesday: 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m.

The Freedom Programme

Freedom Programme introduction

 

The Freedom Programme is a domestic violence programme which was created by Pat Craven and evolved from her work with perpetrators of domestic violence.

 

The programme usually lasts for 11 or 12 weeks and is free. It provided by hundreds of agencies across the UK. Some of them are rolling so women can join at any time, but this varies according to local needs.

 

If you live in Birmingham and are interested in attending the Freedom Programme, please contact your local Family Hub or Children's Centre.
